Hello everyone ![]()
I’ve had anxiety issues for as long as I can remember, and I feel like it has gotten worse (my mental health too) as I start growing up…I’m saying this because ever since my late teens, I’ve been experiencing physical symptoms such as disrupted sleep/insomnia, muscle tightness, cold sweat, dry mouth, an impending sense of doom and panic attacks (which is weird because I’ve had significant stressors when younger but never really had these symptoms). I find these physical symptoms really distressing because they basically interfere with how I function daily. I’ve tried many calming techniques but I feel they never really worked for me because the anxious thoughts still remain and if they remain, these physical symptoms will never truly go away.
I’ve tried seeing mental health professionals regarding my anxiety but they keep telling me my anxiety isn’t considered ‘severe’ and all that…how is it not severe if it starts disrupting your sleep and daily functioning? So I’m thinking about seeing a psychiatrist in order to get a proper diagnosis and anxiety medication…but I’m not sure how to go about doing it? I understand I’ll need to head down to a polyclinic and tell the doctor there about my problems, after which they’ll refer me to a psychiatrist.
I’m also quite hesitant on doing it because I’m not physically ill and I’m afraid the doctor will judge me for it (due to past experiences meeting doctors who were dismissive of mental health issues and my anxiety), but well…this is the only way to go about seeing a psychiatrist. Another thing I’m worried about is my parents finding out that I’m seeing one if I do get referred.
What should I do? Should I just think this one through instead of impulsively getting a referral to the psychiatrist? I just want to know if there’s anything genuinely wrong with me
