Crossroads for therapist

Hi there!

I’m currently seeing therapist (for about 8 sessions already) bi-weekly session however during my 4th session I did told my therapist that I don’t feel supported and connect with her and she suggest if I would like to see other therapist and since she suggest that I also had another therapist in mind that I would like to see hence, she told me that if i were to find a new therapist she would hold on my case for 3 months cause this will be fair to me for my healing journey.

I also did check with her if overlapping sessions will be ok for this transition (because it doesn’t make sense to me to just suddenly jump to a new therapist and be very sure that i will work with the new therapist for a long run) however, she told me no overlapping and I also ask if lets say I try out with therapist and it doesnt work out can i still come back and she say yes and i ask if there is any time that we dont feel align again what will it happen and she say we cant continue anyymore but i trust if u come back to me again means u accept my way of therapy.

I dont deny that she helped me thus far and give some prractical advices and direction but i feel pressure that she will ask if i found a new therapist when would you like to book it cause me stress and coming for 8 sessions and the work that we did so far makes me harder to tell her i need a pause in therapy.

as for the new therapist, i seen her twice already very welcoming, did not pressure me at all. however she is not the type that will give direction like how should say / reply to certain situations but sharing things with her is very comfortable.

I feel that I should decide with 1 therapist before seeing two therapist at once it cause financial burden for me and it might make me more confuse. but I am just at crossroads i dont know which will be the best way for me right now.

Hi @reassuredturnip9 ,

It sounds like you’re feeling really stuck right now. I think there are some things to consider:

The first is about your current therapist. It sounds like the dynamic has improved somewhat since the first session, and you acknowledge she’s given you useful, practical guidance. But the pressure you feel around her expectations is a real signal worth paying attention to. A therapeutic relationship should feel like a safe space, not one where you feel you have to manage her expectations on top of your own healing.

The second is about the new therapist. Two sessions are still very early, but the fact that you feel comfortable and unpressured with her is meaningful. But the trade-off you’re noticing, like less directive guidance (but more ease in sharing) is worth sitting with. Different people need different things at different stages of their journey, and comfort and safety in the relationship is often what makes the deeper work possible at all.

Since you’ve already seen the new therapist twice, you actually have some real information to work with. One question to ask yourself is when you imagine continuing with just the new therapist for the next few months, does that feel relieving or does it feel like something important is missing?
