Don’t know what to do

I’m under fifteen. Lately my parents are going thru a really rough divorce… and my mum has been drowning financially and cries everyday, and needs my constant support. Though I might be able to handle the pressure now, I have been a bit depressed lately and I don’t know what to do. My father has a stroke and currently cannot do anything. Please share any advice with me.

Hi @practicalfinch5508

Thank you for taking your time to write in to Let’s talk!

It sounds like there is a huge pressure for someone your age to experience something like that. It is understandable that you’re feeling this way.

Firstly, I think it is thoughtful that you want to support your mother, her emotional and financial burdens. But it is not yours to carry all by yourself. You can be present for her with love and care, but the responsibility of resolving those challenges should be carried by adults around her. Overextending yourself may have a lot of effects on you, especially your well-being.

Secondly, the depression you have shared here warrants some attention. I hear that you are managing for now, but persistent low mood suggests that it might be worth to seek support earlier than waiting until it becomes harder to address. What you are dealing with is valid and it does not minimize what you are feeling.

Thirdly, I would encourage you to speak to someone about it who can provide support. I can leave some resources down for you to consider here:

  1. If you wish to connect to someone online, national mindline 1771 do have counsellors round the clock who are able to support you through free counselling and providing resources you can consider in the long term. You can call in to 1771 or WhatsApp them at 6669 1771.
  2. If you are still in school, you can also reach out to your school counsellor as your first point of contact.

Please know that you don’t have to go this through alone
