Family tension

My family and I are travelling soon and honestly, I dread travelling with them because there’s always so much tension going on. I’d love to travel w my family because I get to spend time and explore the world but I insanely hate it when an argument/disagreement comes up. Whenever those come up, people just stop talking and appear mad (aka black face in sg terms).

I hate having to walk on eggshells and hate how the mood is just ruined. Simple things like what time should we leave the house to catch the plane also causes disagreement… The trip hasn’t even started…

This has always been the top tier reasons why I hate travelling with my family even thought I’d really love to see the world with them.

What can I do in these situations?

Hey @sincereseafoam977 ! You’re not alone. Nowadays I hate family vacations too. Mine is because my family just seem super spoilt in that they would act like spoilt kids when they go overseas. Mind you…all of them are full-grown adult btw.

And as you said, pretty much walking on eggshells where you just don’t know what can cause a drama to erupt. That buries the mood of vacation, kinda defeating the purpose.

This kind of situation happens whenever I travel with my family ever since 2022. Now that I have learnt the patterns that happens, I know what to expect and how to tackle them.

  1. Have time for yourself

Easy as it may sound, it takes a lot of grit to do that. Try to have something interesting to look forward to in your vacation. For me, I look forward to being able to do my work without the interference of my immediate family, whenever we stay at my grandparents’ place. Honestly, that made me look forward to vacations.

  1. Stay positive

Things don’t necessarily have to follow trends that occur usually. So try to expect the best case scenario happening. Maybe this time when you are travelling, there won’t be any petty fights.

  1. set the mood right

Since you said you like travelling, feel the trip even before you go for it. Kinda like manifesting, but try to imagine the things you’d possibly get to do there, things you can look forward to. Try reading up or gathering information of all the activities you’ll probably do there to make you anticipate the best.

These tips helped improve my vacation this holiday period, so I guess they are kinda tried and tested …

All the best, and happy journey!
