Feeling alone

I just recentlty started poly 2 months ago and I feel quite alone. I do have a friend in my class but I feel guilty cause I’m only friends with her so I don’t feel so alone in such a big school. I used to be quite extroverted but since everyone in my class has their own cliques, I feel hard to connect with them and when I do , it’s like I’m mute, like they don’t listen to me no matter what I say even if I increase the volume of my voice. I know it’s pathetic but whenever me and my friend sit in class , I always hope that someone would come up to our table to sit with us since we’re the only pair in class while other table are filled up with groups of 4-5. It’s the same feeling in cca. I know I’m a pathetic person for ranting this but sometimes I just wish that I don’t feel this way.

Feeling lonely when you’re surrounded by others is a terrible experience.

When we experience loneliness, it can be difficult to describe or explain to others. However, you have articulated your thoughts and feelings very clearly. It seems to me that you are having difficulty connecting with your peers and that can be especially frustrating. We humans do desire connection.

While I understand you feel guilty about your friend, its also important to give yourself some grace. Not all friends must be close friends. Some friends are more like acquaintances, or people you may hangout with a few times a month. Some friends are good listeners. Not all the connections in our life need to look the same.

Meeting new people does not always have to result in a new friendship! Sometimes we just don’t click with everyone and that’s okay too. Don’t give up.

Remember that you’re also at a transition phase in life! Plenty of us start to find new friends and connections at this age. Keep your mind open and don’t be disheartened! :pink_heart:

Hey there, thanks for sharing soemthing so personal. I just want to say that first of all, you’re not pathetic at all. What you’re describing is a really common feeling when starting somewhere new, especially in a big environment where it seems like everyone else has already found their group. Two months can feel like a long time when you’re lonely, but it’s actually still very early, and many friendships in poly take much longer to develop.

It also doesn’t make you a bad friend because you appreciate having someone to sit with. We all need companionship, especially when we’re adjusting to a new place. That doesn’t make your friendship any less genuine.

Try not to measure your social life against the groups you see around you. It’s easy to assume everyone else has found “their people,” but many of them are still figuring things out too. Keep being open to small conversations, group projects, or CCA activities. They often become the starting point for closer friendships.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Feeling lonely doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you or that you’re unlikable. It just means you’re still finding where you belong, and that’s okay:)
