International studies

Hi!

I received an offer to study overseas in a course I really like, instead of feeling overjoyed I’ve just been very stressed. I won’t be able to return home very often and my grandparents are in poor health. I’m afraid that something will happen to my family while I’m unable to return home. How do I cope with this?

Hi there joyfulwildflower3533, thank you for reaching out today!

Firstly, I want to congratulate you on your offer to study overseas in a course that you like. However, it is understandable that you will feel stress about it, having to leave your family and travel to a new country to study is a daunting thing for anyone especially when your grandparents are in poor health. This shows how much you care and love your family, pivotal moments like these in life are always difficult. What I will say is to have a proper discussion with your family on what you should/could do if you were to take up the offer. As to how to cope with it, honestly, speaking to someone you trust and being heard will definitely help in times like these.

Thank you for replying.

I’ve spoken to my family, and they’ve given me their full support. I’ve also come to the rational understanding of the things I will have to sacrifice. Perhaps the problem would be dealing with anticipatory grief. Is there anyone that could help?

To answer your question, there are people who can help with anticipatory grief.

  • Professional support, a therapist or counsellor, especially one who is specialized in grief or palliative care.
  • Community or peer support, places like grief support groups, specifically for anticipatory grief.
  • Trusted family members or friends
  • Helplines to help share your thoughts and process it together.

I do hope that what i shared here will be of use to you.
