I am friends with my classmate, Kyle and my mother wanted to separate ways to make my life harder for me. As I can see, Kyle is an innocent person and wanted to do hangouts with me because he is bored. On the other hand, my mother is always strict with me and tells me to stay away from Kyle. As I was calling her, she said that I have to move further back for safety.
In my perspective, he never molested me or does sexual harrassment ever since then. My mother tells me to sit further away from him, while he does nothing wrong. My mother also said not to join group photos from his smartphone as it can cause misconceptions for love. What can I do and is this even normal for me to become friends with my classmate, Kyle?
Hi @positiveprairie4067 thank you for sharing.
To answer your question, it is completely normal wanting to be friends with your classmates! In fact, that’s a healthy and important part of growing up and school life.
I do understand where both you and your mother are coming from. You are chill with him despite what he had done in the past while on the hand your mother is worried about your safety hence setting boundaries that may seem excessive. I also want to gently flag that if Kyle has behaved inappropriately towards you in the past, it may be worth considering making a report to the police.
But yeah, moving forward it might be a good idea to have a calm and open conversation with her about why she has these specific concerns. Ask her to explain her reasoning so that there is genuine understanding so that the both of you can work towards a middle ground. You may also get a trusted adult involve if you find it hard to speak to your mother about it.
