Job search got me lonely n i need to talk to ppl. Meetup apps arent a good idea cuz the topic will always be occupation n it gets awkward if I’m still job searching or recovering from mental illnesses, happened b4.
So what physical mental illness support groups do y’all recommend?
There are a number of support groups run by IMH! However, I’m uncertain if you need to be an existing patient.
There are others at SAMH, but I’m less clear about whether it is recommended or not, as I’m not too sure who it is run by.
And if you’re open, I believe some religious institutions like churches also have mental health support groups. Again, not too sure who it is run by, so not sure if can recommend per se.
But I’d also encourage you to consider some non mental health groups that are known to be a safe space or have it in their vision/mission! It may feel awkward to say that you don’t have a job right now or had to take a pause for mental health reasons. But it is a very fair and valid reason. Some groups that I’ve heard that are generally quite friendly and open to people regardless of age and background. The ones I know are either art collectives or volunteer opportunities (which might be a chance to not just connect with others who are understanding and trying to do good, but it may help you with your job search and getting used to work as well). The ones I’ve heard of are Seni Sini (art collective), GUI (gardening and farming), and Raining Raincoats (migrant worker volunteering).
I’m an outpatient for imh but i have no idea how to access their support groups. The furthest i got was a peer support specialist. Mine is only depression n anxiety disorder. The one i have heard of is for schizophrenia. My psychiatrist have no idea either. Another person mentioned that there is. May i know how u access the support groups?
