I want to ask any psychiatrist or psychologist about what ive been feeling. I have this feeling of impending doom since the age of 11 and its been happening constantly happens most in large crowds or just normal everyday to day basis and im tired of feeling like this. My heart rate goes up and my breathing gets panicky and it feels like someone is squeezing my chest. Its been affecting my sleep as well and i feel like i want to vomit sometimes.
Hi there tranquilblackberry57, thank you for reaching out today!
From what you have shared, it sounds to me that those symptoms like impending doom, racing heart, panicky breathing, chest tightness, nausea. and disrupted sleep are symptoms of anxiety, and/or possibly panic attacks. This is something that absolutely deserve proper and professional support.
I am really glad to hear that you want to ask or speak to a psychiatrist or psychologist about it, that is the right step to take. With proper support, and a name to it, you will have better clarity as to how to manage and be less fearful of it.
What I would advise or a good next step to take would be to visit a polyclinic and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist. You can share with the doctor what you have shared here and how frequently it has been occurring.
On top of that, I will also advise you to call/text Mindline at 1771/6669 1771 whenever you have symptoms to you have shared happening. Having someone there to help process it and speak to you will definitely help.
Dear @tranquilblackberry57 ,
Thanks for writing in and sharing about what you have been going through over what sounds like a really long time. This sounds exhausting - it seems like this feeling of “dread” shows up in almost every situation you are in and you don’t get to catch a break.
Going to a polyclinic for a referral to a mental health professional, as @LivelyRabbit has suggested, will be really helpful, as they will be able to assess in greater detail as to what, and why you’re experiencing these symptoms.
In the meantime, would you like to share a bit more about how this feeling of “impending doom” shows up (what are some triggers or thoughts that come with?), and, do you think you can recall select moments when you actually feel calm and at peace? We can support you in identifying some patterns and perhaps gain some clarity over it ![]()
yes please tell me the causes and so on
The best answer I could give is that it really depends, multiple different factors could cause those symptoms. This like genetics (how sensitive to stress/threat you are), early life experiences (potential childhood trauma, etc.), prolonged stress (school, daily life, etc.), or somethings it just happens with no obvious triggers. Having said that, the best answers you can get from will be from a face-to-face consultation with a psychologist and/or psychiatrist. Assessment will be done in order to narrow down the causes/triggers and to put a name to it. That way, you and the professionals will know how to support you and manage it. Think of it like an illness, you get symptoms and you might suspect it could maybe a normal flu or something else, but you can only confirm it when you see a doctor and get a name for it.
