Internship is killing me and I don't know what to do

I am currently interning at a court here in Brazil. I am studying information technology. They placed me in a department of the court that is basically Human Resources. They wanted someone from the technology area to automate and streamline some of their processes and in the meantime, they also gave me some HR tasks. Here, I only work with civil servants and it has been very difficult. The civil servants barely respond to my greetings and one of them recently humiliated me in front of everyone because he didn’t like the way I completed one of the processes. They assigned me to automate one of their processes that involves over 3,000 employees and I have no one to help me with the data. My supervisor only talks to other civil servants and does not interact with me at all. I have been having anxiety attacks because of the internship. I can’t sleep because I am constantly thinking about it. It is strange because I know I have been doing my best, but it feels like it is not enough. It feels like I am not good enough to be here. I feel uncomfortable all the time here, I feel like crap all the time. If I could, I would quit and leave, but now this is my only source of income.

Hey there  sounds like you are working in a rather toxic work environment :smiling_face_with_tear: From what you have said here I can tell that you have done your best so you should give yourself some credit for this :+1: How long more do you have for this internship? Perhaps you can try source for others first and hopefully land somewhere better?

Hi @luryalexander25

Thank you for reaching out and seeking ways to better manage the overwhelming challenges you are currently facing. It sounds like you’re facing a tough situation during your internship, particularly with the dynamics in your workplace and the complexities of your assigned tasks.

I agree that it is disheartening to feel isolated or unappreciated in a professional setting, especially when you are trying your best. The lack of response from your colleagues and the negative feedback can contribute significantly to feelings of anxiety and inadequacy.

Furthermore, you have been assigned a complex task - automating processes for over 3,000 employees is a significant responsibility, especially without adequate support or data access. This can understandably lead to stress and anxiety about meeting expectations. Also, the limited interaction with your supervisor can exacerbate feelings of isolation. Effective communication is crucial in any work environment, particularly when you’re learning and adapting to new responsibilities.

  1. Seek Support
If possible, find a mentor or someone within the organization who can provide guidance and support. This could be another intern, a more experienced colleague, or even someone outside your department who understands HR processes.

  2. Document Your Work
Keep a detailed record of what you accomplish each day. This not only helps you track your progress but also provides evidence of your efforts should you need to discuss your work with your supervisor or HR later.

  3. Communicate Proactively
Consider reaching out to your supervisor with specific questions or updates about your projects. This might encourage more interaction and show that you are engaged and proactive about your responsibilities.

  4. Practice Self-Care
Managing anxiety is crucial for maintaining your well-being during this internship. Engage in activities outside of work that help you relax, whether it’s exercising, meditating, or spending time with friends.

  5. Set Realistic Goals
Break down your tasks into smaller, manageable goals. This can help reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and give you a clearer path forward.

Long-Term Considerations

  1. Reflect on Your Experience
After this internship, reflect on what you’ve learned about yourself and the working environment. Consider how this experience aligns with your career goals in information technology.

  2. Explore Future Opportunities
If the environment continues to be toxic or unmanageable, think about what other opportunities might be available. It’s important to find a workplace that values collaboration and support.

  3. Skill Development
Use this time to develop skills related to both HR processes and technology automation. Understanding how HR automation works can make you more valuable in future roles.

Please know that your feelings of discomfort and anxiety are valid given the circumstances you’re facing at your internship. By seeking support, documenting your work, communicating proactively, and practicing self-care, you can better manage this challenging experience. Remember that every internship is a learning opportunity, even when it feels overwhelming. Focus on what you can control and take steps towards creating a more positive experience for yourself moving forward.

Hey, I’m so sorry you’re going through this—it sounds like such a tough and unfair situation. Being thrown into a role that doesn’t align with your expertise, on top of being given such a huge responsibility with no support, is a lot to handle. And then having to deal with coworkers who don’t treat you with basic kindness? That’s just exhausting and hurtful - I would be so hurt to be honest. No one deserves to feel humiliated or ignored like that, especially when you’re genuinely trying your best.

You’re in an environment that’s not giving you the guidance or respect you need to succeed, and that would make anyone question themselves. But please don’t let their behavior make you doubt your worth. The fact that you’re still showing up, pushing through, and trying despite all this pressure speaks volumes about your resilience and strength.

I know quitting isn’t an option right now, but you’re not stuck forever. Try to focus on what you can control, even if it’s just small steps. You’re not “crap,” and you are good enough. This situation is hard, and it’s not fair to you, but it doesn’t define who you are or what you’re capable of. Please don’t hesitate to lean on people who care about you or even vent here again.

I practically have two years of internship. I started in October of this year and ends in October 2026. I’m thinking about holding on for as long as possible and saving some money.

Hmmm 2 years seems like a rather long time to be stuck in this environment but on the positive side things might change too with people moving in and out of the firm.

I hope things get better for you over time and if you ever need we are here to listen :+1:
