Is my issue serious enough for a GP to refer me to a psychologist?

Currently I am going counselling (private) and it is kind of taking a toll on my finances… Also, I am not too sure if it is helping but a friend of mine asked me to get referred to a psychologist instead? The thing is, I have gone to the GP before to see if my symptoms were a mental or physical issue and the GP didn’t seem to take it seriously? I told him I have been really tired, and dizzy. Been having chest pain for the past few months, and I was not eating properly. He did consider mental conditions but told me ‘I looked very calm and fine’. To be fair, I do appear very functional and okay on the surface. I don’t know how to convince the GP to refer me or I dont even know if my issue is serious enough to need to be referred in the first place. Ive had a history of self harm and suicide but since it was in the past, I dont think I should mention it as a reason to get referred.

Are there any other affordable options to go see a psychologist?

Dear @wannagetbetter

Thank you for writing in. It’s a step in the right direction and shows you are taking charge of your mental health.

A)To search for affordable counselling or psychology support do consider exploring the national mindline service wayfinder.

https://www.mindline.sg/mental-health-service-providers/start

There are also self help resources available at the mindline website where you can learn useful coping skill, too. Speaking to the national mindline counsellors who are available round the clock by calling or texting 1771 could be another avenue to explore for guidance on next steps.

B) Next, you can consider visiting the nearest polyclinic for a referral as well.

I believe these resources shared could help you find suitable and affordable support during this journey.:yellow_heart:
