ADHD Diagnosis

Hi, so i have a friend who suspects that he has ADHD and struggles in school. He’s looking to apply for extra time for assessments and get the condition officially diagnosed by a medical professional. However, his parents are not willing to spend much money on this. I would like advice on how he can get this diagnosed? Based on online research, it seems like the cheapest option is to get a referral from a GP or Polyclinic, but are there alternatives? And are there pros to private clinic instead? would appreciate any advice or sharing of experience to help him out thank you!

Dear @Totoro_music

Thank you for writing in and seeking help on behalf of your friend. That is really thoughtful and caring of you. I can see you have a lot of empathy for your friend who you see is struggling.

May I recommend your friend speak to the school counsellor and highlight what he is experiencing and how difficult it has been for him. I believe the schools counsellor can refer your friend and his parents to qualified personnel who can assist.

Do also encourage your friend to read through this resource:

It may be a helpful reference for your friend when he discusses options and next steps with the school counsellor.

I believe that getting an accurate diagnosis has the advantage of unlocking the appropriate support needed, so I would encourage your friend to approach their school counsellor with some urgency as a first step. To keep costs affordable, do also consider the polyclinic referral pathway.

Meanwhile please do continue reaching out here whenever needed. :yellow_heart:
