Hi heartedhim

I am sorry to hear about your struggles. Thank you for courageously seeking help. That is the first step towards you getting better, so well done. Firstly, I want to let you know you are not alone and that you can break free from this cycle.

I believe that you are at a stage where you are motivated to break free from this disordered eating patterns, and want to know what to do next. Here are some suggestions that may help:

  1. Seek professional help: Consider consulting a registered dietitian, therapist, or counselor who specializes in eating disorders. If you are in school, speak to your school counsellor.

  2. Practise self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend in a similar situation. If you fall off the wagon when adapting to new behaviours, please don’t be too hard on yourself. Examine with curiosity what emotions arose that led to the disruption and what you could do instead the next time those emotions arise.

  3. Focus on nourishment: Instead of counting calories, emphasize whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Drink water to keep hydrated.

  4. Listen to your body: Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues, eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re satisfied.

  5. Develop a positive relationship with food: View food as a source of nourishment and enjoyment, rather than something to fear or restrict.

  6. Find healthy coping mechanisms: Engage in activities that bring you joy and help manage stress, such as exercise, meditation, or creative pursuits.

  7. Challenge negative thoughts: Work to reframe unhelpful thoughts and beliefs about food, your body, and yourself.

  8. Cultivate self-care: Prioritize rest, relaxation, and activities that promote overall well-being.

Remember, breaking the cycle of disordered eating takes time, patience, and support. Be kind to yourself and celebrate small victories along the way.
