Work Dread

Is it normal to dread work so much that making it through the week feels like running a marathon but only it’s way worse? I look into 2025 calendar and the first thought
in my head is “Wa there’s so many days to go” before I realised that it needs to be multiplied by xxx years…

Hi user2405, thank you for sharing your thoughts and asking your question here. I am guessing work is a challenging time and space for you at the moment.

To answer your question, whenever I hear someone talk about feeling dread thinking about work. Burnout is something that comes to mind. Has work been a stressful place for you recently?

And if you are experiencing a lot of stress and challenges, it sometimes helps to talk to a professional, and just temporarily shed these burdens that you’ve been carrying. Here is a resource that you can consider:

TOUCH Community Services – TOUCHline

  • Emotional support and practical advice are rendered through this youth helpline
  • 1800 377 2252

And if you are wondering how we can identify burnout, there are 3 main things we keep a lookout for. But first, let’s talk about what burnout is. Burnout simply put is chronic stress that has not been well-managed. So in order to prevent burnout, it really starts with good stress coping strategies.

When it comes to burnout, it occurs in 3 stages:
Stage 1 - Physical, emotional and mental exhaustion (or fatigue)
Stage 2 - Mental detachment (sense of dread or cynicism towards work)
Stage 3 - Decreased work performance

When we recognize that we are dealing with burnout it is important to address and intervene early. Because unaddressed burnout can lead to depression. Burnout is also a lot about feeling overworked and undervalued at the same time. It may be due to feeling a lack of control or a lack of social support, many times it’s due to workplace factors, and then sometimes it’s because our work does not resonate with our personal values. As there are many factors leading to it, I really love to invite you to work with someone to support you in this time. We all need someone to lean on when times are challenging.

I hope you find the support that you need, and that you start to experience joy and fulfillment in your work again.

All the best,

Hi user1138,

Thank you for the response. Taking space or breaks is one of the strategy that we take when dealing with burnout. That is definitely something that you can consider. It is also important during this time to deeply nourish yourself, emotionally, physically and mentally, because you have gone through a lot. This might be time to go back to the fundamentals, focusing on things like diet, sleep and physical activity.

Whenever challenging things happen, it’s never easy. But perhaps, this space can give you clarity about what is important to you. What do you care about, what do you want to see in this world, how do you want to show up and impact this world? This can be the time to dive in deeper.

I know during such breaks, finance is always a consideration. If you like to dive in deeper into a more purposeful way of living and getting clarity and support in the area of finance, I would love to recommend this book to you if you are open to it.

Can look forward to the long weekends in 2025! Singapore public holiday dates for 2025 released, with 4 long weekends - CNA

It feels like there’s a deeper problem that you feel with your work though - is it because the job doesn’t excite you or because you don’t vibe with your co-workers?

Dear @user2405,

It sounds like you’re really overwhelmed and struggling with how you feel about work right now. Dreading the week ahead can be incredibly draining, and it’s tough when your thoughts about the future feel heavy. It’s completely normal to feel this way, especially when it seems like there’s no end in sight.

Remember, you’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed, and it’s okay to seek ways to lighten that load. Have you thought about what small changes might make your workweek feel a bit more manageable?
