I am seeing a therapist for emotional guidance

I will like some advice, recently I was actually diagnosed with depression. I am not happy I was prescribed medicine my problem is I have taken this medicine before, work great but stop after all I was dealing with side effects, not fun. Now I want this new therapy to work for me but as I had imagined, takes time. I’m so desperate I feel lonely. I guess I have to keep trying but I feel like I’m about to loose my cool.

Dear @user4852

Thank you for writing in and sharing your experiences in seeking help in addressing depression.

You have already taken a step forward by seeking a therapist for emotional guidance and recognising that the previous treatment is not suitable for you. By choosing to switch to another form of therapy, you have taken an active role in the recovery process. This also suggests to me that you are clear on the approach that works for you. However, there is a downside to the new approach in that it would take longer to show improvements.

This understandably is a cause for concern, as it impacts the time frame within which you can return to normalcy, such as taking part in enjoyable activities and mingling freely with others.

To reduce feelings of loneliness during this recovery process, I recommend that you work with a therapist on a daily activity plan to follow that includes meeting others. Start with simpler activities and gradually build up the repertoire of activities to do. Record the activity, accompanying thoughts and feelings and discuss with your therapist regularly.

As you recover, treat yourself with compassion and gentleness. Stay focused on recovery and stay flexible, adjusting where needed. With consistent action, stay optimistic that positive change will occur. Keep reaching out here for support whenever needed, too. :yellow_heart:
