i am a secondary student in singapore. recently for the past few months i have been feeling depressed lately, but i am unsure if it is depression or the typical ‘teenage moodiness’ that occurs during puberty. it seems that no matter what i do, i cannot bring myself to feel ‘happy’. and i have no motivation whatsoever to study, or even do the things i normally would enjoy. i also think it could be burnout, but i have not had any stressful periods in my life or exams to worry about. i just dont want the depressive feeling to stay as i dont want my grades to plummet. can i have help differentiating teenage emotions and depression?
Dear @Encore_Lol
Thank you for reaching out! Did you know that that already shows a lot of strength? It’s completely okay to wonder if what you’re feeling is part of puberty, growing up, or something more.
Feeling down for weeks or months, losing interest in things you used to enjoy, and struggling with motivation — even when there’s no obvious stress — are signs that your emotional wellbeing might need some care. It might not be “just moodiness,” and it’s okay to get support for that.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Your school has a counsellor to listen and help. I encourage you to approach this trained professional. Please know you don’t need to have everything figured out. The counsellor will sit with you and gently and slowly help you discover what could be behind how you are currently feeling.
You’re not alone, and what you’re feeling matters. Things can get better — and support is also here whenever you need to reach out.
