I just have no work ethic. I keep procrastinating and not revising even tho my exams are in a week. I just dont know what to do, the only time i can lock in is the day before. How can i actually start revising because i just cant seem to start. And if i do i do 5 mins and then go to do somthing else (not revising) Any help would be great
Hey there, thanks for sharing.
This isn’t a “no work ethic” problem, it’s a “starting problem”. What you’re describing is actually really common, especially when exams feel high-pressure. Your brain avoids starting because it feels overwhelming, so it escapes to easier things.
Instead of trying to suddenly become super disciplined, make it easier to start. Start ridiculously small. Tell yourself: “I’m only going to study for 5 minutes, then I can stop.” The goal isn’t productivity, it’s just to begin. Most of the time, once you start, it’s easier to keep going.
Also, remove friction. Put your notes open, phone away (even in another room if possible), and pick one very specific task like “read 2 pages” or “do 3 questions.” Not “revise everything.” When you drift after 5 minutes, don’t beat yourself up. Just gently restart again. Think of it like training your focus, not testing it.
And one important thing you said you can “lock in” the day before. That means you can focus. So the ability is already there. Right now it’s just about lowering the barrier to start earlier, not fixing yourself.
You’re not lazy, you’re overwhelmed. Start small, stay kind to yourself, and build from there:)
Hey @DavidDavido ,
It seems like the difficulty is with starting, not your ability to work. You mentioned you can focus the day before, so the ability is there.
Your exams are in a week, so there is pressure. When you try to start and stop after a few minutes, it can feel like you are not doing enough, which makes it harder to try again.
What you described shows a pattern: You try to revise > You stop after a short time > You feel frustrated > It becomes harder to start again
It is more about getting started when the task feels too big. It may help to reduce the starting point. Instead of thinking about revising everything, focus on one small and clear task, like one question or one short section.
You can also notice what happens when you stop after a few minutes. Is it because you feel stuck, bored, or distracted? That can help you understand what is getting in the way. Let us hear from you how you have been progressing?
