Failing repeatedly

I’ve failed my driving test three times since October, twice due to the same immediate-failure mistake: landing in the opposite direction during a circuit maneuver. This makes me feel frustrated, and I even question whether I have trouble with directions or shapes.

My family suggests practicing more, but it’s expensive, and I still feel stuck. I’d like your thoughts—could this be a confidence or stress issue? How can I stay motivated and overcome this?

Hey user1472, sorry to hear about that. I can imagine it gets harder each time, because you can really get into your own head and that makes it even harder. How did you feel on the first try, did you feel nervous too?

It’s very common not to pass immediately. Please don’t lose hope, I’m sure you’ll pass eventually. And then you might look back and realise that this experience has made you a better and more careful driver - we need more of those!

Do you need your license soon? Maybe it’s good to take a break until you’re mentally ready. A good instructor should also be able to help you with the test stress and self-confidence.

@user1472 I understand how frustrating this can feel. I failed my driving test 3 times many years ago too, and looking back, I realised that I carried the weight of my previous failures into each subsequent attempt. It became this mental block that fed my nerves and self-doubt.

What helped me finally pass was a shift in perspective: I stopped treating it like a test and approached it as just another practice session with my instructor. It eased the pressure and allowed me to focus on the moment instead of worrying about the outcome.

One thing that worked for me during my preparation was mentally rehearsing whenever I had free time. When sitting in a car or taxi, I’d imagine I was the driver. For example, if the taxi uncle was about to turn, I’d instinctively turn to check the blind spot as if I were driving. This little habit helped me internalise the mechanics of driving and boosted my confidence when I was behind the wheel.

Wonder if you’ve tried this before?

Hi @user1472!

Thank you for sharing your experience—it is frustrating to be facing repeated setbacks, especially when it involves something as important as a driving test. First, I want to acknowledge your persistence in retaking the test. That determination is a strength, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

From what you’ve shared, it seems like stress or self-doubt might be playing a role. Driving tests can feel like high-pressure situations, and that can make it harder to focus or trust your instincts. Here are some suggestions that might help:

  • Practice Visualisation: Before your next test, try imagining yourself successfully completing the circuit. Picture each step calmly and clearly—it can help your mind rehearse success instead of focusing on past mistakes.
  • Shorter Practice Sessions: If cost is a concern, consider asking your instructor for targeted lessons on specific areas like the maneuver causing issues. Even short, focused sessions can make a big difference.
  • Shift Perspective: Instead of seeing past attempts as failures, view them as valuable practice. Each attempt teaches you something new, even if it’s not obvious right away.
  • Manage Stress: On test day, take deep, slow breaths to calm your nerves. Repeating a simple affirmation like “I am capable and ready” can help ground you.

Remember, passing the driving test is a process, not a reflection of your worth or abilities. You’ve already shown resilience by trying again—keep that spirit alive
