Two months ago, I gave doctor’s memo to my employer. The memo state that I have loose stools when I’m anxious and condition is anxiety disorder.
The IBS symtoms has been going on since 2022 - going to toilet a few times before I could step out of home to go to work. I felt I became worse these few months. I started eating slower than others, unable to process quickly and reply, unable to express what I want to say to others, creating lots of misunderstanding and problems. I wanted to take a break but I am not sure if I would get better when work resume or it will still be the same. I currently scared of every telephone call at work. I am not sure whether it is because of the call in Mar 25 where my client said some nasty remarks as i was unable to explain clearly to him…
I seek help from polyclinic + private specialist and still useless. No improvement but getting worse. I have been tearing everyday instead of every week. I want to give up on everything
Dear @thatlittlemelody
Thank you for sharing what you have been going through. I can see, hear and feel how challenging it has been for you with the anxiety related IBS. Please know that your wellbeing is a priority. If at any time, you feel overwhelmed, in immediate danger or feel you might act on thoughts of giving up, please reach out to call an ambulance at 995. If talking to a caring and compassionate counsellor is preferred, please call the national mindline at 1771 or SOS at 1767. All hotlines operate 24/7.
From my experiences, I believe anxiety and IBS fuel each other. Worry triggers gut symptoms, gut symptoms heighten worry. Over time, that loop can slow your thinking and make speaking feel hard, especially after a painful call like the one in Mar 25.
May I recommend to consider
-
Doing 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) for five cycles, or splash cool water on your face for 10–20s. It can quickly dial down the stress response.
-
Keeping a card on your desk you can read from that contains a script of FAQs to refer to. Also, giving yourself permission to pause makes calls less frightening. With practice, you can become more confident of yourself. After each call, do write down what was asked, your responses and what worked well/ could be improved. Keep building the list of FAQs you can refer to.
-
Preparing familiar, gentle foods; oral rehydration salts; any as-needed meds you’ve been prescribed for cramps / loose stools.
-
Consulting your doctor and updating him that symptoms are getting worse, and if can refer you to a psychologist with experience working with gut- brain disorders. Ask too about referral to a nutritionist who can draw up a meal plan that can help manage your diet, such as foods to eat in the morning and other meals/snacks.
Please do not be discouraged. I think you’ve already taken charge of the situation by seeing doctors, handing your employer a memo, and continually figuring out what else to do to face this challenge. Keep taking small steps, making tiny improvements/tweaks towards the direction you seek. Tap on support services available, and keep reaching out here too for encouragement and support whenever needed. You don’t have to do this alone.
Mind i ask, what is your daily diet like?

How are things at work like for you? Are you happy at work?
If you need to go to the toilet a few times before you can go to work, it means something a long the way has triggered a anxiety response in 2022. So….did i happen after you got this job or you already have this issue before this job?
And bad or traumatising experience in 2022 before you get this issue?
Actually….i guess change of job and working route might be helpful for you. It always good to find that root than just treating the surface of the problem.
I am feeling hopeless as I always have bad flatulence when I am in office working.
Its always very stressful having to deal with IBS symptoms and not being embarassed in office everyday. I worry that I might have diarrhea in the mornings and be late for work. This has been ongoing for more than a year. My productivity and speed is worse than my peers. Even though my manager said its okay but I feel like giving up..
