How can I not make a colleague or superior uncomfortable when work ?.

Hi everyone,

Is difficult to work with someone who has a confirmed bias towards autistic adult that are troublesome or hard to work with.

As an autistic adult with AuDHD, I would like to asked everyone how can I work with colleagues that has a bias or feel uncomfortable when you’re around ?.

The scenario goes like this, this psychologist R and Co - worker N were both of my female colleagues and superior.

When both were discussing about a client in the centre, I could find that Psychologist R were uncomfortable when I observed their conversation.

I assume that Psychologist R thought I would like to add on their discussion about this client hence, the bias had already occurred to Psychologist R from the pass experience with her.

So I would like to ask how can an autistic adults not to be bothered by co-worker conversation ?. Or not to intentionally addon to their work mental footnote? So I could not be an eyesore to them ?

Hi Ouchast_93,

That sounds like a frustrating and uncomfortable situation to navigate, especially when you’re already aware of how your presence might be perceived and you’re actively trying to be considerate of that.

A few thoughts that might help.

On a practical note, if you notice colleagues are in a discussion, giving them some space can signal that you’re not tuned in, even if you naturally are. It’s not about pretending, just about giving visual cues that can ease the other person’s discomfort.

On the deeper side of things, working with someone who has a confirmed bias against autistic adults, especially in a mental health setting where they really should know better, is genuinely hard. You shouldn’t have to constantly manage their discomfort on top of doing your actual job.

Just curious, do you have anyone at work who’s in your corner, so to speak?

I guess most just like to engage or work with us. I believe from this Colleague N and Psychologist R.

It is in a classroom setting, where a male Autistic adult working with female colleague can be challenging.

I try not to overhear their conversation. But I guess the auditory disturbance from my class and their discussion can be overloading for me. I guess I would walk away or give them space next time.

Just to say this M organisation and there’s this assistant manager Y who told me, “we are facing challenges working here with intellectual disabled individuals and you don’t have to be one”. This conversation had already makes me want to leaves this organisation in another few years.

Having to wearing numerous different masks for the clients and for them can be exhausting. I had to pretend I’m normal to work with them. Where they know I’m a flawed individual and emphasising that they don’t need problems.

Next time I guess I won’t need to disclose my neurodivergent.

I guess I have to give them space so to make themselves comfortable having their , “girl talk”.

Same for this Assistant manager Y, after they hire me knowing that I’m autistic. They treat me like I’m special adult ?.

When I m crystal mind state with Ritalin. Seeing this neurotypical pretense and ingenuity is tiresome and disgusting.

So this Assistant Manager from Organisation M from Kebun Bahru told me we are facing challenges in the centre and we have enough intellectual disabled client and you don’t have to be one of them just irks me.

I really think do they enjoy working with these less privileged individual like them ?.
