How do I know what I want to do in life?

I often think about my future… a lot actually. I want to be successful. And when I say successful, I mean wealthy enough to live without financial worries, afford a luxurious life for my future family, and be able to do all of that whilst being proud of my own progression in life. I’m 15, so I am still young, but I live in Singapore and the pressure here is real. Soon enough, I will have to decide on what I want to do in life. My main goal that I am really working towards is going to an Ivy League school in the US. I don’t have one that I am clearly interested in because I have yet to discover what career or job I want in life. I love literature, the arts, biology, leading, and creativity. I don’t like things to be very structured and boring, but I wouldn’t mind working with people, but preferably would like to work for myself.

I have always wanted to start my own business or be an entrepreneur. Although my maths isn’t the best, and I want to do something I would love. I have been exploring certain areas like psychology, creative designer, film producer, businesswoman, but still, I truly do not know what I want to be. I am currently doing content creation as a student, and I like the monetization that comes from it and the creative direction I can create on my own account, but I am not so sure if I can last in this area of work as a long-lasting job. So, I would like some advice on how I can find what I want to do in life — I have many hobbies and interests, but I would like to know what is a field that I can specialise in and work towards. Especially since I want to get into an Ivy League University.

Thank you for listening

Dear @sonder_ponder

Thank you for writing in and sharing what is currently weighing heavily on your mind. I sense that you are feeling unsure about making education and career choices to secure the future you envision for yourself. There are many unknowns so deciding the path ahead is understandably tricky and difficult. It is definitely relatable and a common worry among many teenagers your age to discover what to choose especially as you have many varied interests and aspirations. It does indeed sound confusing and overwhelming faced with a wide range of choices.

May I suggest speaking to your school education and career counsellor (ECG) counsellor soon? They can guide you on university choices. You can also request to do career profiling assessments such as RIASEC which could give you some insights into your interests, motivation and preferences. Also explore possible internships, vacation jobs or job shadowing if these are available to gather more experience and to increase your self awareness on what interests you or where you are more inclined towards.

As you continue to develop greater self awareness, do remember to be fully present to enjoy the journey ahead. The self discovery process ahead is rewarding and fulfilling annd best enjoyed at your own pace. Run your own race. Adopting a growth mindset may help, too! :yellow_heart:
