just broke up and i cant accept it

i just broke up with my boyfriend of 6 months, i dont know why it hurts so much though it lasted such a short while and i dont like the way it ended.

i feel very naive because he said that i was not attractive enough for him and before this i had constantly believed him when he complimented me for my looks, i dont like being lied to

and everyone keeps telling me that this is why getting into a relationship this early is bad and i feel very at a lost now because i still see him every week due to a shared class and everytime i see him i will run up to start a conversation with him though things have ended. i honestly feel so awful because he says he has moved on and it sucks that even after the breakup im still the one who lost in the sense that i am doing the emotional work for the both of us and idk i just wanted it to be him and im having troubles seeing past this relationship because im angry at myself that even up till this point i really want to be with him.

Hey @packetoftissues29 .

I’m sorry you’re dealing with all of this at once.

To be honest, the length of a relationship has very little to do with how deeply it affects you. The feelings you have are real and they make complete sense.

I want to say though, that the comment he made about attractiveness is a particularly mean thing to say to someone, and I can understand why it’s left you feeling confused and a bit betrayed. It’s worth knowing that his compliments before the breakup might not necessarily be a lie. People’s feelings and attractions are complicated and can shift, but the way he chose to frame the ending says a lot more about his character than it does about your worth. You were not naive for believing someone who was supposed to care about you.

Having to see him every week must make this so much harder. It’s difficult to process a loss when the person is still right there in front of you, and the impulse to go up and talk to him is completely understandable. Grief often makes us reach for what we’ve lost. But it might help to give yourself a little more distance where you can, even small things like sitting further away or leaving class without lingering, just to give yourself some space to heal.

The anger you feel at yourself for still wanting to be with him is something a lot of people go through. It just means you cared genuinely. Moving on isn’t linear and it rarely happens on a neat timeline, especially when you’re still in close proximity to the person.

I do think it would be worth speaking to your school counsellor about this. Having someone in your corner who can support you through this in a consistent way would really help and you deserve that kind of support right now.
