I have a friend (30M)who I haven’t spoken to in some time who reached out to me asking if I know anyone with a spare room. He related to me that he had become unable to to pay his rent and needed to find a place to stay.
I found out that he had been renting by himself for the past 7 years (poor relationship with parents, moving back not an option). He is has been unemployed for the past 6 years, possibly burnt out from working long hours some years prior and experiencing the end of a long-term relationship. He also shared that he has debt from a loan he took from a bank, though I am not sure how much, nor the interest rate.
He’s had a rough childhood and teenager hood so no judgement. Just want to know what I can do to help
I am seeking advice about how I can help him practically, what official channels are available for such cases and if I should get clarification about any details about his situation.
Hey! @enthusiasticdragonfruit5641 ,
If you’re looking for official financial assistance in Singapore, it helps to think in tiers: immediate support, ongoing assistance, and debt/employment recovery. Here are the key ones your friend can realistically access:
- Social Service Offices (SSO) — First Stop
Social Service Offices
This is the main entry point. They assess the full situation and route to the right schemes.
What they can help with:
- Cash assistance (daily living needs)
- Rental / housing support
- Utilities support
- Referral to other services
This is usually the most important first step because they assign a caseworker.
- ComCare Financial Assistance
ComCare
Managed through SSO.
Types:
- Short-to-Medium-Term Assistance (SMTA) → monthly cash + bills support
- Long-Term Assistance → for those unable to work
Good for your friend if:
- No income
- Struggling with basic expenses
- Housing Support
Housing and Development Board
If he risks losing housing:
- Public Rental Scheme (subsidised rental flats)
- Temporary housing options (case-by-case via SSO)
Important: Housing support usually goes through SSO referral as well.
- Debt Help
Credit Counselling Singapore
What they do:
- Help restructure debt
- Negotiate with banks
- Provide repayment plans
This is critical if his debt is already accumulating interest.
- Employment Support
Workforce Singapore
- Job matching
- Career coaching
- SkillsFuture / training support
Even if he is burnt out, this helps rebuild structure slowly.
6. Mental Health / Burnout Support
