In today’s post on cognitive distortions, I’d like to cover the next one which is personalisation.
This is where a person takes everything that occurs (external/outside of their control) personally and assumes full responsibility for it unnecessarily:
“The bus driver was rude to me because I did something wrong”
“We’re late to the party and caused everyone a terrible time…”
Thus, ‘counter’ it by having self-compassion; cultivating a growth mindset after a setback to learn from the mistakes; list down the things within the situation that are actually in the person’s control
“What is the positive that I can take from here?”
