I have been feeling anxious during mealtimes. Halfway through eating, I would feel like tearing up and have no appetite. This is new, and even at the comfort of my own place and eating with my family, I would get these anxious feeling.
Dear @user8426
Thank you for reaching out. I agree that what you shared sounds distressing. I believe you are experiencing a high level of anxiety recently and the body has started linking anxiety to symptoms you shared. This has unfortunately impacted eating.
May I gently recommend the following the next time you feel anxious :
-
Pause, put your utensils down
-
Take a few slow breaths
-
Remind yourself: “I’m safe, this will pass”
-
Go back to small bites if you can (even a little is enough).
I notice this association of linking anxiety with meal times is new and it would be timely to get help to address it. It may help to take note of the thoughts coming up in your mind contributing to the anxiety. Speak to your parents and discuss seeing a counsellor soon to nip this in the bud. If you are in school, set up an appointment with the school counsellor.
The counsellor will be able to teach you anxiety reducing techniques. With consistent practice, I believe you will be able to feel safer and resume enjoying meal times.
You’re not alone in this, and this can get better with the right support soon.![]()
hi, thanks for sharing!!
in addition to what u said, do u think there could be anything that happened recently that makes u feel bad? possibly because mealtimes are usually a more relaxed period, so there’s less to distract you from something that youve been stressed about
also, i just wanted to add on that randomly feeling anxious and wanting cry isnt something that makes u weak, it just could be that you’re overwhelmed, so dont worry too much about it
maybe itd help to reach out to a trusted friend or counsellor and see if they have any insights to make?
