Hello!
Recently, i got a new job. However, i always have terrible social anxiety at new environment. Because of that, i often give people a bad first impression that i can’t talk well. I keep thinking the new colleagues hate me and i get major panic attacks that i need to step away from the office and sit all alone rather than with my colleagues. I felt so small and i feel like my colleagues are all so smart and talented. I am so scared to step out and i don’t know how to talk to them at all since my interests are so niche and unusual.
This isn’t the first time, i am always bad at any new environment. I really don’t know what to do ):
Hey @cooperativevalley6436, thank you for reaching out!
It really takes a lot of courage to put all these feelings into words, and I really appreciate that.
It sounds like starting this new job has brought up a lot of fear and self-doubt in you
The panic attacks, urge to step away and the sense of feeling small compared to the rest…those are real and difficult experiences, and it completely makes sense that they’re weighing on you.
I’m really curious about something you shared! Something about your interests being niche and unusual? Sometimes the things we feel like barriers to connection are actually the most interesting parts of who we are
People often connect more deeply over genuine and unexpected things than over small talk!
About thinking like your colleagues hate you, do you have any evidence that supports that? Sometimes our minds have a way of filling in the gaps with the worst possible interpretation, even when the reality is more neutral.
You also shared that this pattern tends to show up in new environments…that’s actually really valuable to note! It tells us that this isn’t about this job or colleagues only, and that it’s something deeper that deserves to be worked on.
If you’re open, there is support available! If you’d like to speak to someone over the phone, you can always reach out to National Mindline 1771, okay? You can call them at 1771/whatsapp them at 66691771. They are available 24/7, and can discuss support options with you
Hey @cooperativevalley6436,
Thank you for sharing the struggles you’ve been facing at your workplace. I hear that you’ve recently got a new job and it has brought up self-doubts about yourself, leaning more towards how others see you. I also hear that you’ve had these challenges before at new environments. It certainly isn’t easy to deal with these feelings, especially when they are coupled with uncertainties at a new place.
Like what @reassuredshiba mentioned, our minds tend to think about the worst outcomes when we feel stressed or anxious. Maybe you could try challenging these thoughts and assumptions. For example, do you have any evidence that supports them?
Moreover, when you mentioned that these feelings have happened in the past, I’m curious, did these feelings improve as you become more accustomed to the environment? What helped you in the past to cope with them?
