Is it normal to have a phobia of knives

i have this phobia of knives, I did overcome it during Food and Consumer Education (FCE), but after being cut by a knife, I am back to feeling afraid of it. How should I overcome it.

Hi jerlyne2024.Bong

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re experiencing a phobia of knives again after being cut. I agree having an accident like that is indeed unpleasant and scary.

Please be assured though that phobias are quite common and can be overcome.
However, getting over a phobia takes time and patience.
It may help to fall back on your past, where you successfully overcame the phobia. You have done this before☺️

Reflect what worked for you before. I encourage you to remind yourself how you overcame the phobia previously and assess what you could implement this time around.

Meanwhile, here are some steps you can take to help:

  1. Gradual Exposure. Gradually expose yourself to knives in a controlled environment, starting with small steps like looking at a knife, then progressing to touching or holding one.
  2. Relaxation exercises. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, visualization, or meditation to help manage anxiety when confronted with knives.
  3. Use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Consider seeking help from a therapist who can help you identify and change negative thought patterns associated with your phobia.
  4. Slowly desensitise. Repeat positive affirmations to yourself, like “I am in control” or “I can handle this,” to help desensitize your fear response.
  5. Support System. Share your fears with a trusted friend or family member and ask for their support and encouragement.

Remember, overcoming a phobia takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed.

You got this♥️
