Hi I changed upon this website so im trying it out for the first time. I have always been an overthinker since young worrying about everything and trying to plan ahead as best as possible. Doesnt help that I want myself to achieve great things be it in school or social life anything. I always obsess over small little things and I can beat myself up over it for so so long. Recently its been getting worse ans I get so tired and overwhelmed. I have no motivation or energy to do anything or rather start/finish anything i currently have and thats affecting my life. I also feel my emotions a lot more stronger and I just tend to breakdown into fits of crying that is very hard for me to control and stop. Its honestly quite tiring to have these breakdowns while still doing my work and trying to maintain my social life as well. I wonder if there are ways to cope with the emotions and better deal with them..
Hi @tryingpanda02 thank you for taking your time to write in to let’s talk!
It must have been exhausting for you to experience cycle of high expectations, overthinking and beating yourself up when things do not go the way as expected. That must have taken a toll on you, and I can see why that over time it got heavier for you to carry.
Those emotional breakdowns, the loss of motivation, and overwhelming feelings, often suggest that your mind and body have been through strain for a while now, and something needs to be shift.
Some things to consider here to start off with. Firstly, try not to fight the emotions when they surface. Resisting these often intensifies them. Allow yourself to feel them. It can actually shorten how long the wave lasts. Secondly, when motivation decreases, you should not have to feel ready before you start. You can try to start with something really small or manageable for you first. Thirdly, those inner critics that drives your high standard is trying to protect you in some way, but it can also potentially be harmful for you especially if it leads to burnout. Trying to notice that voice without believing it is a skill that times time over time, but that is something that’s possible to learn.
However, I do want to say, given that things have been getting worse recently, it might be good to know that you can speak to someone about this if you have not already done so. A good first point of contact can be your school counsellor. However, if you would like to explore for support outside school, you can also reach out to National Mindline 1771. They have counsellors round the clock who are able to support you through free counselling and providing resources you can consider in the long term. You can call in to 1771 or WhatsApp them at 6669 1771. Please know that you do not have to go through this alone ![]()
