Will counselling help to let go of the past

Theres some issues that happened in the past in my relationship which greatly affected me and to this day i still think about it. I saw a counsellor for it previously which helped a lot but my package with them ended and i did not continue it as i felt better ( not 100% better but i felt good enough)

Now i realise that thoughts of this issue still come up and bother me…im not sure if it would benefit to try going for counselling again? I feel that im generally ok in my daily life just that i will think about this issue sometimes. There are also rare occasions when i will go into a spiral deep into my thoughts which brings up a lot of unhappiness due to ruminating about the issue which affects my relationship.

Unfortunately im not able to go back my previous counsellor and the thought of having to explain everything to a new counseller and trying to find a suitable person that i can feel safe with is daunting, especially because of the cost of counselling…hence im conflicted if it will even be helpful to see a counsellor for these issues.

Hi @Shinyditto

Thank you for coming forward and sharing your experiences very courageously. It’s completely normal to still have lingering thoughts and emotions from past issues, even after initial counselling. Seeking additional counselling can be beneficial for several reasons:

  1. Unresolved emotions: it can help you process and resolve remaining emotions related to the past issue.
  2. Improved coping mechanisms: You’ll learn new strategies to manage recurring thoughts and prevent downward spirals.
  3. Enhanced self-awareness: Explore underlying patterns and triggers contributing to rumination.
  4. Relationship impact: Address how past issues affect your current relationship dynamics.
  5. Personal growth: Develop emotional resilience and strengthen your mental well-being.

You could write down the key issues from your past relationships which are relevant and summarise for the new counsellor. There is an opportunity for your situation to be viewed through a fresh lens.
